Congo rebel leader to face war crimes trial for child soldiers
Jan 29, 2007, 15:00 GMT
The Hague - Rebel leader Thomas Lubanga Dyilo is to face trial on war-crimes charges relating to forcibly conscripting and deploying child soldiers in 2002-03 during the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the International Criminal Court ruled Monday.
Presiding Judge Claude Jorda made the ruling in The Hague following hearings during November at which the prosecution presented its allegations that Lubanga Dyilo, 46, enlisted children under the age of 15, conscripted children and deployed them in active hostilities.
The case is the first to come before the ICC, the first permanent international judicial body for trying war crimes.
