UN reduces peace troops along Ethiopia-Eritrea border

Jan 31, 2007, 2:16 GMT

New York - The UN peacekeeping force along the Ethiopia- Eritrea border will be reduced amid a lack of progress in settling the border dispute between the two countries, the UN Security Council decided on Tuesday.

The council reduced the peacekeeping force from 2,300 to 1,700 and strongly urged Ethiopia to accept a decision by an international panel that demarcated a new border. It also asked Eritrea to pull all its troops out of a UN buffer zone and halt restrictions on peacekeeping activities.

The council allowed the peacekeeping mission to remain along the border another six months, until July 31, but it specifically asked the two countries to show 'maximum restraint and refrain from any threat or use of force against each other.'

The UN force was sent to monitor a ceasefire that ended the 1999- 2000 border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The agreement also called on both sides to accept the new demarcated border to end their dispute. Eritrea has accepted the new borders, but Ethiopia rejects the decision it.
