China's Hu begins controversial trip to Sudan
Feb 2, 2007, 8:00 GMT
Khartoum - Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Khartoum on Friday for what may prove to be the most controversial part of his eight-nation tour of Africa.
The Chinese leader, who already secured debt relief and various trade deals in West Africa's Cameroon and Liberia, has been pushed by the international community to use his influence in Sudan to urge its leaders to solve the crisis in embattled Darfur.
Beijing has been accused of ignoring human rights abuses when making trade deals and investments, especially with Sudan, whose government is charged with arming militias who have been attacking villages in remote Darfur for nearly four years.
China has spent 1.5 billion dollars buying half of Sudan's oil to feed its thriving economy and trade between the two countries has amounted to 2.9 billion dollars in the first 11 months of 2006, according to China's Xinhua news agency.
Western countries, however, have been pondering trade sanctions against Khartoum.
Hu's 12-day trip to Africa is meant to bolster economic ties between Beijing and its resource-rich African partners following a China-Africa summit in November 2006.
