Liberian president's chief of staff resigns over sex scandal
Feb 27, 2007, 10:59 GMT
Monrovia - Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf accepted the resignation of her chief of staff following a sex scandal, reports said Tuesday.
Photos of Willis Knuckles having sex with two women were last week circulated on the internet and in two local dailies. Knuckles was minister of state for presidential affairs.
In an address to the nation Monday night, President Johnson- Sirleaf announced that she had accepted Knuckles' resignation.
'I accepted the resignation ... because first, I have sworn to uphold high standards in my own behaviour ... second, because I am in full agreement with those who feel that Knuckles' behaviour, while not illegal, is improper and inappropriate for a public servant,' she said.
She emphasized that even though she regretted the resignation of Knuckles, who she described as a good administrator, her regret 'cannot extend to condoning improper behaviour by a public servant who has sworn to uphold the government's code of conduct.'
Since being sworn in as president just over a year ago, Africa's only female leader has vowed to purge the government and the country's bureaucracy of corruption and those who have 'violated public trust.'
