Two American tourists shot by bandits in northern Tanzania

Arusha/Nairobi - Tanzanian police are holding six people in connection with the shooting of two American tourists and a local guide, an official said on Thursday.
One woman was shot in the stomach and a man in the left leg after they were attacked by armed bandits Wednesday near their lodge in Tarangire National Park in northern Tanzania, police said, and were sent for treatment in the Kenyan capital Nairobi after the incident.
'The tourists were assaulted by the bandits who were carrying a gun and a knife. We are interrogating suspects and are conducting an investigation,' said Arusha regional police commander Basilio Matei.
The Tanzanian guide was shot in the head and is in serious condition, Matei added. The three other tourists, two Americans and one Briton escaped unhurt.
Last month, tourists near the Ngorongoro crater were attacked by robbers, who took their belongings but were not harmed.
Tanzania's north draws thousands of tourists each year and the country's economy is heavily dependent on tourism. Neighbouring Kenya has a similar dependence, but attacks on tourists are more common there.
