Algeria bombings probably not suicide attacks, minister says
Apr 17, 2007, 9:39 GMT
Algiers - The three car bomb attacks on the Algerian capital Algiers that killed 33 people, including the terrorists, on April 11 were 'very probably' not suicide attacks, Interior Minister Mohammed Yazid Zerhouni said on Tuesday.
'It is very probable that the terrorist drivers of the three cars were blown up with their explosives without their knowledge,' Zerhouni said.
He explained that police investigators had found a remote detonation device in the wreck of one of the cars used in the attacks, suggesting that the bombers themselves did not set off the bombs.
The Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb group claimed responsibility for the attacks, which targeted the government palace in the heart of the capital Algiers as well as a police station in an eastern suburb.
