Algeria continues pre-election offensive against terrorists
May 15, 2007, 11:55 GMT
Algiers - At least 13 suspected terrorists were killed in clashes with Algerian forces in the countries east, according to Algerian press reports on Tuesday.
The clashes, which occurred Monday, mark a continuation of a government-led offensive against underground radicals days before parliamentary elections.
According to the reports, the terrorists belonged to the al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb group, formerly known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC). The clashes took place in the town of Tebessa (near the Tunisia border) and near the town of Bourmerdes.
Six soldiers were also killed and six wounded in bomb attacks in the offensive within the last 48 hours.
The terrorist group has called for a boycott of Thursday's elections. The group has however been put under pressure by the Algerian military in the last weeks and has suffered severe losses.
