Jul 24, 2007, 11:39 GMT
Algiers - Elite Algerian forces killed 20 al-Qaeda fighters in an attack on a fortified position of the terrorist group Monday, as meanwhile in another part of the country an Algerian soldier was killed and 8 others wounded by a bomb, press reports said Tuesday.
The reports said that the attack on the al-Qaeda position in the forest-covered mountains of northern Algeria, some 150 kilometres east of the capital Algiers, brought to 24 the total number of al- Qaeda fighters killed there since mid-July.
Initially, some 60 al-Qaeda fighters had been circled by the Algerian forces on July 13, with the members of the terrorist group gathering for a meeting. A number of al-Qaeda fighters were captured, while others managed to escape.
The elite soldiers in storming the position also managed to seize a satellite telephone and a laptop computer containing the names of 572 persons who were to take part in the meeting.
The military carried out its attack with helicopters and soldiers wearing night-vision goggles because the Muslim fighters had set up mines and explosive booby-traps in the area.
Meanwhile at Boumerdes, 50 kilometres east of Algiers, one soldier was killed and 8 wounded in a bomb attack on Monday.
