Slovakia extradites al-Qaeda terrorist suspect to Algeria
Nov 30, 2007, 13:20 GMT
Bratislava - The regional court in Bratislava has ruled that alleged al-Qaeda-linked terrorist Mustapha Labsi is to be extradited to Algeria, reports said Friday.
The 37-year-old Algerian was arrested in Slovakia last year as a result of an Interpol investigation.
According to previous media reports, Labsi is alleged to be a member of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, a North African branch of international terror organization al-Qaeda.
Labsi has been a suspect in connection with al-Qaeda terrorist plots in France and the US and has spent time in custody in London.
He was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment in 2005 in Algeria.
Prior to the court ruling, the Slovakian prosecutor's office stated in front of the court and the media that it had an assurance from the Algerian authorities that Labsi would not face torture or the death sentence.
The Slovakia branch of international rights organization Amnesty International has expressed concern about Algerian assurances and has protested against the extradition.
