Thousands of faulty condoms found dumped near South African school
Dec 26, 2007, 15:54 GMT
Johannesburg - Tens of thousands of faulty unused condoms were found dumped near a primary school in South Africa's KwaZulu- Natal province, provincial officials said Wednesday.
Residents of the Inanda area north of Durban discovered the condoms Tuesday - the second such find in around two months.
The condoms appeared to be from the same batch as the around 100,000 condoms manufactured by KwaZulu-Natal-based Kohrs Medical found scattered around the area in mid-October.
Officials from the province's health and environment ministry said arrests were imminent in the first dumping incident.
In September the department of health was forced to recall 5 million condoms supplied by Zalatex after discovering they were faulty. In October came a second recall - this time for condoms manufactured by Kohrs.
The companies are among several licensed to supply the state with condoms for free distribution as part of the government's HIV/AIDS prevention strategy.
In the Zalatex case the condoms were approved for use after an official from the South Africa Bureau of Standards took a bribe.
