Niger Delta militants attack vessel, wound three
Dec 27, 2007, 18:32 GMT
Abuja - Niger Delta militants attacked a vessel carrying supplies to American oil giant Mobil Thursday, wounding three crew members, police said.
The vessel was heading to Bonny Island when it fell under heavy fire by the gunmen, police spokesperson in Rivers State Ireju Barasua told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur.
She said the wounded had been taken to hospital and the vessel anchored at Onne River port. None of the amny groups of Niger Delta militants made any immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
Militant groups in the Niger Delta repeatedly attack oil production facilities and abduct expatriate oil workers to press their demand for greater control of oil and gas deposits in the region, which provides Nigeria with more than 90 per cent of its annual foreign exchange earnings.
