Twelve dead as Niger Delta militants attack police stations, hotel

Abuja - Less than 24 hours after the Rivers State government lifted a curfew in the Niger Delta state, militants attacked two police stations and a hotel Tuesday, killing more than 10 people, state police commissioner Felix Ogbaudu said. Ogbaudu told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that the militants launched the attack on Borokiri and Trans-Amadi police stations in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, between midnight and 0300 GMT. 'At the Borokiri police station, three policemen were killed in a shoot-out with the militants. Seven civilians who were either returning from church or just milling around their neighbourhood were also killed,' he said. He said that the police also killed some of the militants and recovered three assault rifles and one machine gun from them. 'The assailants later abandoned the three vehicles with which they operated when they faced superior fire power,' Ogbaudu said. He said that at the Trans-Amadi police station, one police inspector was killed when the same militants opened fire on the station. He said that the militants also attacked Hotel Presidential in Port Harcourt, opening fire on the hotel's lobby. They killed a security man and wounded several others. None of the myriad militant groups in the region has claimed responsibility for the attack. The governor of the state, Chibuike Amaechi, summoned a meeting Tuesday to review the security situation in the state.
