Next Zim president might no be known for a "few more days" (Extra)
Apr 3, 2008, 14:49 GMT
Harare - Zimbabwe's tense wait for the outcome of last weekend's crunch presidential election may not be over Friday as initially thought, it emerged Thursday.
Speaking after talks with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission the chairman of a Pan-African Parliament (PAP) team of election observers said: 'Hopefully by tomorrow they will (ZEC) be in a position to know (the presidential result) if by Saturday everything will be done or it has to last a few more days.'
Marwick Khumalo was speaking to SABC Africa, an arm of South Africa's national broadcaster, five days after Zimbabwe's synchronized presidential, parliamentary and local elections.
ZEC had said it would release the election results within six days of voting.
Further delays were likely to fuel reports of frenzied behind-the- scenes diplomatic activity aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the electoral standoff.
The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has already declared party leader Morgan Tsvangirai victorious over longtime, authoritarian President Robert Mugabe - a claim the ruling party rejects.

Politisite reported days ago that the opposition leader had won outright without a need for a run off gaining 50.3% of the vote. These numbers came as a result of each polling place posting peliminary results. The story is found on Nowpublic a citizen journalist site that has reporters all over the world. The problem is that the offical results keep getting delayed. How is it that unoffical results can be posted the day of or the day after the election? Rigging maybe? With the new rules, rigging will be in the sunshine. Today the New York Times is reporting the results we have posted that came from the independent election centre.
