South Africa expresses concern over Zimbabwe farm evictions

Pretoria - South African Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Aziz Pahad on Thursday expressed his country's concern over white farmers being forcibly evicted from their land in Zimbabwe.
The minister provided details told the SAPA news agency of talks between Zimbabwean Commercial Farmers' Union (CFU) president Trevor Gifford and South African diplomats.
'The problem here as he identified it is that most of the farmers are about to harvest their crops and as result Zimbabwe is at risk of losing food worth millions of dollars,' Pahad said.
He added that South Africa made an official complaint to Zimbabwe after two South African citizens were threatened with eviction.
Youth militia loyal to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe chased around 60 farmers - including one black farmer accused of voting for the opposition - off their land, Gifford said.
Mugabe's land reform has been blamed for decimating the country's once vibrant commercial agriculture, wrecking the economy and causing widespread food shortages.
