Looting, burning of relief supplies cost UN 1.2 million dollars

Aug 7, 2008, 19:43 GMT

New York - The United Nations agreed Thursday to disburse 1.2 million dollars to purchase non-food items, like blankets and kitchen sets, that had been burned or looted from UN warehouses for refugees in Chad.

The Central Emergency Response Fund in New York decided to release the amount at the request of the humanitarian coordinator in Chad following fighting in eastern Chad in June, which resulted in the losses in relief supplies.

'These funds will enable us to provide essential household items covering some of the needs of the refugee and internally displaced persons in Goz Beida region affected by the June 15 events,' said Serge Male, a representative of the UN refugee agency. The items to be replenished include mosquito nets, blankets, plastic sheetings, tents and soap.

The fund, which was set up in 2006 to meet needs in humanitarian emergencies, has so far released 890 million dollars for the rapid response to urgent situations. Governments and donors have so far pledged more than 400 million dollars to the fund for this year.
