Sana'a, Yemen - A Yemeni navy commando unit stormed a hijacked ship on Monday and killed three Somali pirates and arrested 11 others, government officials said.
The officials told the German Press Agency dpa that the commando operation took place at dawn.
At least 14 Somali pirates hijacked the empty tanker, Qana, on Sunday, as it was sailing from the Arabian Sea port of Nashtoon in Yemen to the southern port city of Aden.
The pirates attacked the ship about 10 nautical miles off the south-eastern port of Balhaf.
Twenty-three seafarers, including three Indian nationals, were on board the vessel.
According to coast guard sources, the pirates had tried to seize three other vessels sailing along with Qana, but failed to board them.
