Sudan's al-Bashir denies war crimes in Darfur
May 12, 2009, 15:56 GMT
Nairobi/Khartoum - Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has denied that his forces committed war crimes against civilians in Darfur in his first TV interview since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his arrest.
'I challenge anybody to bring me evidence that proves the Sudanese armed forces attacked and killed citizens in Darfur,' he told the BBC on Tuesday.
The ICC accuses al-Bashir of genocide and other war crimes carried out in the restive Darfur province.
The conflict in Darfur began in 2003 when mainly non-Arab tribesmen took up arms against what they call decades of neglect and discrimination by the Arab-dominated Sudanese government in Khartoum.
The UN says up to 300,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million displaced during the conflict.
