UN peacekeepers to deploy in Southern Sudan after tribal clashes
May 14, 2009, 10:48 GMT
Juba - Around 120 peacekeepers are to be deployed to the Southern Sudanese state of Jonglei after tribal clashes that have killed hundreds, the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) said.
The peacekeepers are to provide humanitarian assistance and protection for civilians in Akobo and Pibo counties. They would also attempt to promote dialogue to bring about a peaceful solution.
At least 750 people died in March during fighting between the Nuer and Murle ethnic groups that was sparked by cattle rustling raids.
