Darfur refugees bemoan world's lack of interest in their plight
Jun 1, 2009, 6:30 GMT
Nairobi/Khartoum - A spokesman for about 2.7 million refugees in the region of Darfur in western Sudan complained about international indifference to their plight and a deterioration in their living conditions, a newspaper reported Monday.
Hussein Abu Scharati told the Sudan Tribune newspaper that the international community is not doing enough to prevent the worsening of the situation after 13 aid organizations were expelled in March.
Scharati asked the US ambassador to Sudan and other official representatives to visit them and listen to their demands. Conditions for refugees are getting worse 'day by day,' he said
He accused the government in Khartoum of manipulating foreign visitors. A delegation of US senators recently visited several refugee camps chosen by the government and only met pro-government 'fake refugees,' he said.
The conflict in Darfur started in 2003 and pits the Sudanese armed forces and Janjaweed militia against various Darfur rebel groups and civilians.
