Footballer charged over road death after Confed Cup party

Jun 30, 2009, 8:20 GMT

Johannesburg - South Africa defender Bryce Moon faces a charge of culpable homicide after allegedly knocking down a woman, who subsequently died after being refused admission at two hospitals.

Moon was driving from a party organised by Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena after the Confederation Cup final between Brazil and Unites States at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Monday when the accident occurred, the Sowetan newspaper reported Tuesday.

According to the reports, Moon was driving a Mercedes Benz when he lost control and hit Mavis Ncube, a domestic who was walking to work.

Moon was rushed to the private Morningside Medi-Clinic where he was treated for head injuries and later discharged.

Moon sustained head injuries that is why he was taken to hospital instead of the police station,' Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Superintendant Wayne Minnaar told the newspaper.

However, the 25-year-old woman Ncube was initially turned away from two state hospitals because they did not have the capacity to treat her before also being rushed to Morningside Medi-Clinic where she died shortly afterwards.

Moon, 23, was charged with culpable homicide after the crash and blood samples were taken from him at the clinic. Police are waiting for the results of the blood tests.

Midfielder Moon has 15 caps for South African and currently plays for Greek side Panathanaikos.
