China blasts arrest warrant for Sudanese president
Aug 5, 2009, 13:24 GMT
Kampala - China's special representative for Africa and Sudan's troubled Darfur province said Wednesday that Beijing opposes the arrest warrant issued for Sudanese president Omar al Bashir and called for negotiations with Khartoum.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) earlier this year issued an arrest warrant for Bashir, accusing him of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.
'If Sudan is on fire, the international community should put out the fire,' Mr Liu Guijin told reporters in the Ugandan capital Kampala.
'The situation in Darfur is very complicated,' he added. 'We need a comprehensive approach to address the problem.'
China has invested billions of dollars in Sudan, particularly in the oil sector, and has been steadfast in defending the Islamic regime there, angering Western governments, human rights groups and political opposition parties.
According to the UN, as many as 300,000 people have died and 2 million have been displaced in six years of conflict in Darfur.
