Three killed in tribal warrior attack on aid convoy in Uganda

Feb 13, 2010, 16:52 GMT

Kampala - Three people including a policeman and a government official died and another was injured when cattle rustlers in Uganda's remote north-eastern region of Karamoja attacked an international aid convoy on Friday, officials said Saturday.

Military officials said the two-vehicle convoy belonging to aid agency International Rescue Comitee (IRC) came under attack.

A policeman, a local government official and a driver were killed when Karamojong warriors rained bullets at the convoy, the area's army spokesman, captain Henry Obbo, told the German Press Agency dpa.

An American charity worker with IRC escaped unhurt while another person was injured.

The army was searching for the attackers, Obbo said, speaking to dpa by telephone from the region.

The military expects to catch up with the killers as they were together in a group moving with herds of cattle they had earlier stolen in a raid, Obbo added.

The Ugandan army is carrying out a forceful disarmament of the warriors in the Karamoja region which has been afflicted for decades by bloody cattle raids that have led to loss of hundreds of lives and the displacement of thousands of people among neighboring tribes.

The tribesmen also stage ambushes and sporadic attacks on convoys of charity organizations and UN agencies which deliver food and other non-food items to the hungry and malnourished people in the semi-arid region.
