Antananarivo - The death toll in the tropical storm that ravaged part of the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar last week rose to 28 after a landslide swept away several houses in the south-east, local media reported Monday.
The landslide, whick killed eight people and severely injured seven, took place in Mananjary district, one of three districts that tropical storm Hubert doused in torrential rain last week, Les Nouvelles daily reported.
Over 20,000 people have been made homeless by the storm, the national disaster centre BNGRC said in an update Monday.
Emergency supplies have been delivered to the flooded areas but electricity and water supplies have been severely disrupted.
The prime minister of the island's transitional government, Albert Camille Vital, has appealed to the international community for aid.
The impoverished island of Madagascar, the world's fourth-largest island, is hit each year by deadly cyclones or tropical storms during the summer rainy season.
