Ugandan army kills 16 rebels in Central African Republic
Jun 2, 2010, 8:14 GMT
Kampala - The Ugandan army has killed 16 members of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) militia in the Central African Republic (CAR) in the past few days, a military spokesman said Wednesday.
'On May 29th, our forces killed five LRA men and then on 30th, they killed 11 others,' army spokesman lieutenant colonel Felix Kulayigye told the German Press Agency dpa.
'Our squads are continuing to hunt down the LRA and this time, they landed on some groups and they engaged them in a fight.'
Elements of the LRA, which fought a decades-long civil war that displaced close to two million people in Uganda and left thousands dead or abducted, fled to the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and parts of the CAR in 2006.
Following an agreement with the governments in DR Congo and the CAR, Ugandan forces subsequently moved to fight the LRA there.
Five LRA commanders including its leader Joseph Kony have been indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for murder, torture, rape, abductions and forced conscription of children into fighting.
The first conference to review the performance of The Hague-based war crimes tribunal since its first inception in Rome in 1998, is currently taking place in Uganda.
