UN Security Council renews arms embargo on Congo's armed groups
Nov 29, 2010, 18:51 GMT
New York - The UN Security Council Monday extended for another year an arms embargo, travel ban and financial freeze on illegal armed groups operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The council asked UN members to 'fully' implement the sanctions, which will last until November 30, 2011, and it called on the independent group of experts monitoring the measures to focus attention on activities by illegal armed groups operating in Congo's North and South Kivu and eastern provinces.
The experts were asked also to focus on criminal networks and violators of international humanitarian laws and human rights.
The experts had informed the council that criminal networks have been working within the Congolese armed forces, known by the acronym FARDC, to exploit the country's natural resources through illegal taxation, to protect rackets and to organize various businesses.
They said the Mai Mai Sheka, one of the armed groups in eastern Congo, was a 'creation of a criminal network within the FARDC.'
The Mai Mai Sheka was accused of mass rape of over 300 civilians in the Walikale area in late July.
