Apr 18, 2011, 16:32 GMT
Kampala - One person died in the Ugandan capital Kampala and 11 others were injured as police fired tear gas and gunfire at crowds in opposition-led protests against high commodity prices, Red Cross officials have said.
The victim, Joseph Mugisha, died shortly after reaching hospital, Uganda Red Cross spokesperson, Catherine Ntabadde said by telephone.
Eleven people were injured in various parts of the city suburbs when police battled with people in the 'walk to work' matches called each Monday and Thursday to protest against government inaction to curb the rising prices of essentials especially fuel.
Kizza Besigye and the leaders of two other main opposition parties in the country have been detained after President Yoweri Museveni over the weekend warned that opposition leaders would be arrested if they went ahead with the protests.
