UN: Four peacekeepers killed in Sudan's Abyei region
Aug 2, 2011, 16:31 GMT
New York - The United Nations reported Tuesday that four peacekeepers from Ethiopia had been killed by a landmine in Abyei, the disputed border area between Sudan and South Sudan.
UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said Secretary General Ban Ki-moon sent his condolences to families of the victims and the government of Ethiopia, which provided most military personnel to the UN mission in the Abyei region.
The UN Security Council has authorized the deployment of 4,000 peacekeepers to maintain order and security in Abyei and more than 400 of them have arrived.
