Missing scuba diver found safe - inside police cell
Sep 15, 2011, 12:30 GMT
Johannesburg - South African rescuers went into high alert on Wednesday night, after receiving reports that a scuba diver had not returned from his last venture out into the ocean.
As emergency responders went to work, a thorough officer placed a call to the man's family.
Instead of having to relate bad news, the officer learned that the missing diver was safe and well, just held up in a police detention centre.
'Fortunately the mother of the missing man informed us that her son had just called her and that he was locked up in the cells of a police station,' National Sea Rescue Institute spokesman Craig Lambinon told the SAPA news agency.
The man was arrested for allegedly diving in a protected marine reserve without a permit.
The search was subsequently called off.
