Seven per cent drop in people killed by South African police
Sep 29, 2011, 14:41 GMT
Johannesburg - The police killed 797 people in South Africa between April 2010 and the same month this year, a decline of 7 per cent compared to the previous 12 months, the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) announced on Thursday.
In all, 53 per cent of the deaths occurred at the scene of an alleged crime, while 16 per cent took place in a police vehicle or holding cell, according to Francois Beukman, the ICD's director.
During the period under review, there were 60 convictions of police officers in court for various offenses and about 90 internal disciplinary convictions.
South Africa faces one of the highest rates of violent crime in the world, though recent police statistics indicate armed robbery and murder were seeing a decline, though reported rapes were on the rise.
