US condemns suicide attack in Somalia
Oct 4, 2011, 20:52 GMT
Washington - The United States condemned a car bombing Tuesday in Mogadishu that killed at least 65 people in the war-torn Somali capital.
'Those who carried out these attacks have nothing to offer the people of Somalia except murder and destruction, and they must be held accountable,' White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
He noted that the attack underscores the need for international support of the African Union mission in Somalia and the country's transitional federal government.
The Islamist militia al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack, and Carney said the group has 'shown its utter disregard for human life and human dignity' both in its attacks and in denying aid to victims of the famine in the Horn of Africa, which has sparked a refuge crisis in Somalia.
