Sudan, South Sudan fail to withdraw forces from border town Abyei
Oct 6, 2011, 20:15 GMT
New York - Sudan and South Sudan have failed to pull their respective armed forces out of the disputed border town of Abyei, an oil-rich region claimed by both sides, the UN said Thursday.
Herve Ladsous, the new UN undersecretary general for peacekeeping operations, told a UN Security Council meeting that the situation has aggravated living conditions of migrating herders and farmers along the border.
'The UN mission's best efforts cannot compensate for the progress urgently needed on the political track,' Ladsous said.
The council had deployed the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in June, after fighting between the two sides forced 100,000 people to flee their homes. The governments on both sides agreed to pull out their troops to ease tensions, but so far have not done so.
