Job done in Libya, NATO chief says as mission is ended
Oct 28, 2011, 10:50 GMT
Brussels - NATO's job in Libya 'is done,' the head of the military alliance said Friday, as he announced that military operations in the country would end on October 31.
A meeting of NATO ambassadors in Brussels 'confirmed (the) decision taken a week ago: (the) operation in Libya will end on 31 October 2011. Our military job is now done,' NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen posted on twitter.
The announcement came a day after the United Nations Security Council voted to end the mandate for NATO's operations in Libya, following the death of former leader Moamer Gaddafi.
NATO has yet to say how it intends to respond to a request from the new Libyan authorities for a continued presence to help with securing borders and combat illegal migration.
