South Africa's former top cop loses appeal against 15 year sentence
Dec 2, 2011, 8:48 GMT
Johannesburg - A South African court on Friday dismissed an appeal by the former police chief, Jackie Selebi, against his corruption conviction and 15-year jail sentence.
Selebi was found guilty in 2010 of receiving payments from a drug trafficker. The former top cop was called a 'liar' by the judge who convicted him last year.
While he was free pending the appeal, it is now likely Selebi will have to begin to serve jail time.
Selebi was suspended from his job as national police commissioner in 2008, as the charges against him became public.
He was replaced by Bkeki Cele, who was subsequently suspended in October, after it was revealed he was involved in dubious lease agreements for the police.
