South Africa's Tutu in hospital, but full recovery expected
Dec 12, 2011, 9:47 GMT
Johannesburg - South African former Anglican bishop Desmond Tutu was in hospital on Monday after being admitted at the weekend to undergo an undisclosed medical operation, according to officials.
The famed anti-apartheid activist, who last month celebrated his 80th birthday, was due to accept an award early Monday at the University of Cape Town, but was unable to attend because he was in hospital.
His spokesman Roger Friedman said the surgery had been elective and that Tutu, who battled prostate cancer in the 1990s, was recovering.
'He could be released this afternoon, though his family is quite keen for him to spend another night in hospital,' Friedman told local news agency SAPA.
Friedman declined to give further details, other than to say the surgery was to allow the archbishop 'to live more comfortably.'
Last year, Tutu said he would retire from public life. However, the man who South Africa's first black president Nelson Mandela described as the 'voice of the voiceless' has remained active, both domestically and globally.
