UN says two staff members, aid worker killed in Somalia
Dec 23, 2011, 16:41 GMT
Rome - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on Friday confirmed reports that two of its Somali staff members and a colleague from a partner relief group were shot dead in Somalia.
The three men were killed in a morning attack which took place in the town of Mataban, in the Hiiran province of central Somalia, the Rome-based WFP said in a statement.
The victims were identified as two WFP members of a monitoring mission - Muhyedin Yarrow, 54, and Mohamed Salad, 28 - and Abdulahi Ali, who worked for Doyale, one of WFP's non-governmental organization partners in Somalia.
'The attacker reportedly gave himself up and was taken into the custody of the local authorities. WFP operations have been temporarily suspended in Mataban while the case is investigated,' the WFP statement said.
The mission was in the area to monitor a general food distribution as well as camps for internally displaced persons in the conflict-ridden Horn of Africa nation.
WFP condemned the attack, noting how it illustrates the risks that humanitarian workers face 'in one of the world's most difficult and dangerous environments.'
