Report: Darfur rebel leader killed by Sudanese army

Johannesburg - Sudan's military killed the leader of the main rebel movement in Darfur before dawn on Sunday, the Sudanese news agency SUNA reported.
Khalil Ibrahim, who had reportedly returned from exile in Libya to the restive western Sudan region this year after the fall of Moamer Gaddafi, was killed in battle, a Sudanese army statement said.
He was killed, along with other members of his Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), 'after a long chase,' the army said. Sudanese government officials said that Khalil had been trying to reach South Sudan.
Ibrahim reportedly died in Wad Banda, an area in North Kordufan state. The area has seen clashes in recent days, and civilians are said to have been killed.
JEM, which was formed in 2000, had received some support from the former Libyan regime, and the fall of Gaddafi was seen as a blow to the movement.
The group signed a peace deal with Khartoum last year, but then pulled out. Other rebel groups have stuck to a deal reached in Qatar.
