Woman killed in stampede at South African university
Jan 10, 2012, 9:56 GMT
Johannesburg - A woman died and 17 people were injured in a stampede on Tuesday at the University of Johannesburg, where students were queuing for last-minute registrations.
According to news agency SAPA, the woman was the mother of a prospective student. The crush took place just after the gates opened and people rushed inside.
Some prospective students had slept on the pavement outside the university, in the hope of being the first through the doors.
The number of people applying to tertiary institutions in South Africa far exceeds the available spaces. Tens of thousands of high school graduates are turned away each year.
