Jan 10, 2012, 16:08 GMT
Monrovia/Abuja - One person was killed and several wounded in an attack Tuesday on a mosque in the southern Nigerian city of Benin, Nigerian television reported.
The police source, who spoke on national television, did not say if any group had claimed responsibility. There were no immediate details on the nature of the attack.
Attacks on places of worship in Nigeria have claimed at least 50 lives since Christmas Day, when a coordinated spate of bombings targeted churches around the country.
Radical Islamist group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the Christmas Day blasts.
Tuesday's attack comes after a day of violence in Benin over protests against fuel subsidy removal.
Young people looted shops and a money exchange bureau in the city, according to The Nation newspaper, which also reported that a generator was set alight next to a mosque.
