REPORT: ICC extends deadline for information on Gaddafi's son

Jan 11, 2012, 7:25 GMT

Cairo - The International Criminal Court (ICC) has extended a deadline for Libya to provide information on the health and wellbeing of Saif al-Islam, son of the slain Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi, Arab media reported Wednesday.

The Dubai-based broadcaster Al Arabiya quoted a spokesman for the court, based in The Hague, as saying that the deadline was originally set for January 10, but had been extended to January 23.

The ICC has accepted that Saif al-Islam be tried in Libya, after it indicted him for crimes against humanity. But it has stressed that it wants assurances the country's new rulers will give him a fair trial.

According to the broadcaster, the ICC could refer Libya to the United Nations Security Council if it failed to submit the report on the date set by the tribunal.

Saif al-Islam is being held in the western Libyan town of Zintan. He was arrested while trying to flee the North African country in November.
