Clinton arrives in Liberia, begins West Africa tour
Jan 16, 2012, 9:31 GMT
Monrovia - US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arrived in Liberia Monday morning, where she will attend the inauguration of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, and preside over the opening of a new US embassy building.
Clinton flies to neighbouring Ivory Coast Monday afternoon, where she will meet with President Alassane Ouattara, who came to power last April after former leader Laurent Gbagbo - now in the Hague awaiting trial for war crimes - was ousted from power.
Next on the whistle-stop tour of the region is Togo, where Clinton will become the first ever secretary of state to set foot in the francophone country. There, she will meet President Faure Gnassingbe. Togo won a seat on the UN Security Council for 2012.
The trip concludes Tuesday in the island state of Cape Verde, which has been praised for its dramatic economic and development progress in recent years.
