Base jumper injured in failed Table Mountain stunt to face fines
Jan 17, 2012, 13:34 GMT
Johannesburg - A man who severely injured himself while base jumping off South Africa's Table Mountain will face fines and possible legal action, the authorities said Tuesday.
Merle Collins, a spokeswoman for the Table Mountain National Park, said, 'He is very, very lucky to have his life.'
'He was absolutely not allowed to jump,' Collins told the SAPA news agency. 'We will definitely fine him and possibly press charges.'
Jeb Corliss, 35, is in intensive care in a Cape Town hospital after clipping a rock and crashing. But, he said from his hospital bed: 'I feel better than I've ever felt.'
The base jumper had completed more than 1,000 jumps, including from the Eiffel Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge, before his failed attempt in South Africa.
The Table Mountain overlooks Cape Town and is a major tourist attraction. In 2011, voters around the world, using social media platforms, chose the mountain to be listed as one of the New7Wonders of Nature.
