Foreign engineer kidnapped in Somalia
Jan 21, 2012, 14:29 GMT
Mogadishu - A foreign engineer has been kidnapped in Gal-Mudug state, a semi-autonomous part of Somalia, officials said Saturday.
Interior Minister Abshir Dini Awale told dpa that the kidnapped man held dual US and German citizenship.
He was travelling from the town of Galkayo with another foreigner when he was taken by armed men. Witnesses said he was taken to the south of Galkayo.
'We heard that some local businesspeople were responsible for their security and we are still investigating the case, said Dini Awale. 'We don't know where the kidnapped foreigner was taken to or who was behind this,' he said.
The kidnapped man was reportedly working on a project to reconstruct the port at the town of Hobyo.
It is one of a string of kidnappings near Galkayo in recent months. Two foreigners and a Somali working for a Danish organization were kidnapped near the airport last October.
