Jan 22, 2012, 12:34 GMT
Brussels - The European Union will seek to promote 'peace, security and development' in Nigeria, its foreign policy chief said Sunday, following a spate of terrorist attacks in the north that she said threatens to destabilize the entire country.
'We offer our support to the Nigerian people and government in overcoming this threat to their way of life and their country's stability and democracy,' said the statement from Catherine Ashton.
'We will discuss with the Nigerian government in the coming days ... possible ways and concrete actions in support of peace, security and development in the country, particularly for the poorest communities.'
It noted that Nigeria has 'a long tradition of religious and social tolerance.'
