Deputy chief of Libya's ruling council quits after attack on office
Jan 22, 2012, 14:04 GMT
Cairo - The deputy chief of Libya's ruling National Transitional Council (NTC), Abdul Hafiz Ghoga, resigned Sunday after protesters attacked the council's headquarters in the eastern city of Benghazi.
'Members of the council are working under difficult circumstances. My resignation is prompted by the desire to serve national interests,' Ghoga told broadcaster Al Jazeera.
Dozens of Libyans on Saturday stormed the NTC headquarters in protest at the perceived slow pace of reforms in the country three months after the end of the armed struggle against the regime of Moamer Gaddafi.
Ghoga was Thursday assaulted by angry students at Benghazi University over the authorities' alleged negligence of the fighters wounded in the revolt against Gaddafi and the families of those killed.
Residents in Benghazi, the birthplace of the anti-Gaddafi revolt, have protested for nearly two weeks, demanding more transparency and justice from the country's new rulers.
