Cape Town - South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Saturday confirmed the suspension of Julius Malema, the president of the ANC Youth League, but gave him a final chance to argue his case.
An ANC committee ruled against an appeal by Malema, against a decision in 2011 to suspend him from the league for five years.
Malema had harmed the reputation of the party, the ANC's Disciplinary Committee said in Pretoria. But he would be allowed to re-state his position within two weeks, it said, to determine the length of the suspension.
Malema and five others were accused of bringing the party into disrepute over comments threatening to bring down the government in neighbouring Botswana.
Malema has been a controversial figure in the party, having previously criticized President Jacob Zuma for failing to lift more blacks out of poverty, and made allegedly offensive remarks about whites.
