Feb 13, 2012, 14:59 GMT
Dakar/Abuja - Pirates attacked a cargo ship in Nigerian waters Monday, killing two crew members, Nigerian television reported.
The ship's captain and chief engineer, who were on the bridge when the pirates approached, were killed by gunfire.
The Nigerian coastguard and a French military vessel rescued the rest of the crew, who locked themselves in a safe area in order to survive, reports said.
The Malaysia-based International Maritime Bureau (IMB) warned vessels to stay away from Nigerian waters in the wake of the incident.
The ship was about 110 nautical miles south of the commercial capital Lagos when the incident happened.
