UN beefs up African mission in Somalia to fight insurgents

New York - The UN Security Council on Wednesday authorized the African Union mission in Somalia to increase its military strength to more than 17,730 personnel, in an effort to assist Mogadishu in fighting al Shabab insurgents.
The 15-nation council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution presented by Britain, which called for a clearer mandate for the mission. AMISOM, as the mission is known, currently has about 12,000 troops, most of them from African countries.
