Hague: London conference offers "historic" chance for Somalia
Feb 23, 2012, 9:24 GMT
London - Somalia has an 'historic' chance to leave behind decades of violence, poverty and chaos, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said in London Thursday.
Speaking before the opening of a high-profile international conference on Somalia, Hague said the conference would build on a series of international agreements already struck on Somalia.
US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon are among participants.
The conference, with the participation of more than 50 governments and organizations, follows recent successes by Somali government troops against Islamist group al-Shabaab.
'The timing of this conference is perfect,' said Hague. Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali said he hoped the conference would agree on a plan for his crisis-ridden country.
Late Wednesday, the UN Security Council in New York voted to increase African Union troops stationed in Somalia to more than 17,000.
