Morales officially confirmed as Bolivian president
Dec 22, 2005, 8:11 GMT
La Paz - Leftist Evo Morales received 52.8 per cent of the vote in recent elections, clearing him officially as president of the South American country, the election commission said Wednesday.
Had he won less than 50 per cent of Sunday's vote, the final decision would have gone to parliament.
Morales' nearest rivals were centre-right politician Jorge Quiroga, who took 29.6 per cent of the vote, and cement industrialist Samuel Doria Medina, who took 8.2 per cent.
Both candidates had already conceded the election to Morales.
Morales' inauguration is slated for January 22. His party, however, the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS), was unlikely to win a majority in parliamen.
Morales earlier this week moved to reassure international investors in the energy sector, pledging to respect oil companies` ownership of assets - despite his intention to nationalilze the country's energy sector.
