Mutiny at Mexican prison leaves three hostages, one inmate dead
Nov 19, 2006, 6:23 GMT
Mexico City - A revolt in a Mexican jail resulted in the deaths of four people Saturday, three of them hostages taken by the inmates, authorities said.
Four inmates on Friday took a total of 15 people hostage - 14 lawyers and one guard - sparking a 30-hour stand-off with guards and police who entered the compound.
The inmates let seven hostages go unharmed, but a shootout Saturday to free the remaining eight hostages led to the four deaths - three hostages and one inmate.
It was unclear whether police, numbering in the hundreds, had fully restored calm Saturday night at the prison in Morella, 300 kilometres north-east of the Mexican capital.
The revolt reportedly began after the four inmates discovered they were set to receive heavy jail terms for kidnapping.
